Ostia is at about a thirty- minute-drive by car.
It still preserves its ancient splendor. According to ancient tradition, Ostia was founded by the fourth king of Rome, Ancus Marcius, who was thought to have ruled in the late seventh century, situated at the mouth of the river Tiber, playing an important role as a military harbor, and for that reason the inhabitants were freed from military duties, so that they could remain at work in the harbor.
But over the course of the centuries, it became a true metropolis with more than 50.000 residents living there. Amongst which we will visit the main commercial road, the antique areas used for the trading and exchange of goods, ancient apartment buildings, the areas and techniques of production, The Piazza of the Corporations, the Tabernacle, the theatre, ancient warehouses and docks , the cult statues and the religious communities, the Synagogue, the Mitreo, the Christian Basilica, the Round Temple and the Capitolium, the Forum, with its Capitol, the Cardo Massimo, the Baths, the Thermopolium and the Small Market, the residences and the modern-day buildings of Ostia Antica with its restored areas , its monuments and its sepulchral monuments.
This tour will give us the opportunity to discover the real Ostia, a smaller version of “Pompeii” as it was commonly called by the Roman people. We will be able to admire one of the largest cities constructed during epic Rome.
